THE IN-HOME STYLING GUIDE
In-home sessions are unique because you are capturing life exactly how it is.
In general, neutrals do photograph best in-home. Homes tend to be busier, and your outfit should blend in, as opposed to being a statement in the photo.
Below you’ll find some simple tips + tricks to pay attention to when styling for your in-home session. Be on the lookout for newborn specific colors to pay attention to (if applicable). I’ve also included links at the end to help get you started.
The vibes:
Planning the rest of your family around you (looking at Moms!) tends to be the easiest way to start. What you wear determines the vibes of the full session. There are multiple directions you can go with this. You can do cozy, intimate vibes. These include jeans, oversized sweaters, or matching sets. We love a good family monochrome moment.
If you choose to wear a dress, I recommend choosing a midi or maxi length. There tends to be more sitting when photographing in your home, so you don't want to choose something you're readjusting often. Something flowy and comfortable always photographs so well. If you are postpartum, I recommend wearing a dress that either has an empire waist or no waist at all.
Dainty statement details are beautiful touches to add, especially if you are choosing to go more casual. Statement rings, stacked necklaces, and dainty bracelets all go a long way when photographing the lifestyle details of you in your home.
And (parents) always, always, always, go barefoot!
The colors:
I recommend staying away from any skin toned colors for the outfits, particularly in newborns. These include red, beige, or orange. Colors like blue, black, white, etc photograph really well for babies! For other family member’s outfits, dainty patterns or all white/cream can really compliment your newborn's skin tones. The kids:
If you have a newborn: most people choose an outfit for the first half, and then swaddle the baby for the second half. Any other siblings should be dressed in complimentary colors with minimal patterns (dainty works best). Keep in mind (when dressing little girls) that dresses can sometimes be hard to play in. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have your littles wear them! But there will be times underwear may show. Layering for kids can be super cute, as that texture shows through really well in photos.
