Step two:

The fun part: dreaming up your session. Building out a vision board is an important piece of this process. This is why I start by sending you my own to start your creative juices flowing. From there, I’ll have you build out a board + fill out a questionnaire for me. We’ll choose a location & activity (if applicable) to plan to get your family nice and comfortable while I’m with you. I’ll make sure you’re all set one shoot day arrives!

Step one:

After we make sure we’re a good fit, let’s make it official! You’ll receive a full proposal from me, including a contract and invoice for deposit. Once the contract is signed and the deposit is paid, it’s official and we’ll get to planning! I’ll start with sending you a few location examples and an outfit styling guide. This will help you get an idea for where you want your session to go, and hep us start the planning process.

Step three:

Let’s shoot! Because of the planning we did in advance, your shoot day will feel largely like you’re hanging out with your family & and old friend. I’ll arrive with ideas that we created together, plus a few of my own, to make your of experience seamless. This will not only put everyone at ease, it will also ensure that we capture your family fully and honestly in this season. After our session, I’m doing a little happy dance all the way home - giddy to go through your photos. Expect a full edited gallery within 3 weeks of our session!

The Approach (What do I get?)

Because we took the time to thoughtfully and carefully plan your session, the actual shoot day will feel like a special day to really focus and play with your family (with a little tag along!). We will spend the first 10-15 minutes of the session knocking out any portraits (aka looking at the camera and smiling poses aka “mom shots” that we all like to have for gifts!). The rest of the time will be used to play, explore, cuddle, and enjoy each other. If we are doing a session in your home, we will have pre-planned activities to do together. If we are doing a session outside of your home, you’ll likely have brought props and other activities so that the kids will stay excited and involved. You may be wondering why our session is up to an hour and a half, and the answer is simple: your story is worth taking the time to tell. You cannot force candid moments in the same way you can’t force intimacy, especially with kids. Most kids (and let’s face it, adults do too) need time to feel comfortable in front of the camera. As I create a safe environment for them to play and feel understood, this leads to the freedom to be themselves, which allows us to create the season exactly the way it is. And, let’s face it: as parents, it’s HARD to slow down. The longer you sit and truly enjoy your family, the better your story will be told in a way that feels honest to you. Because of this, much of your session will feel like hanging out and following your kids lead. There may be some chaotic feeling moments (as at any time with young kiddos), but I encourage you to trust the process and go with the flow.

FREQUENTLY
ASKED
QUESTIONS:

  • I have tested all amounts of shoot time for littles (under 5) ranging from 10 minute sessions to 70+ minute sessions, and truthfully: the majority of kids do best with longer sessions when we are shooting in their home environment. It gives us time and space to allow them to relax, play, and be themselves in front of the camera. Many kids struggle with shorter sessions because they are forced to be “on” immediately. And trust me, they will not be required to sit still. ;) Outdoor and studio sessions are a bit shorter since there are less activities and games for the kids to participate in.

  • Throughout the last 3+ years of shooting families, I have experimented with many different session lengths and I can confidently say: if you want a storytelling + documentary style approach, you need more time. Typically, our sessions have some sort of activity (simple or big!) planned that will truthfully make the time fly. Geniune and intimate moments can’t be forced into a 10 minute timeframe. This time will be utilized carefully to create a safe space for your kiddo (and let’s face it… husbands) to be themselves. That being said, there are occasions where I choose to offer mini session marathons (25-30 minutes). These are planned ~6 weeks in advance with a set date/location/time frames, and are always announced on Instagram.

  • To put it bluntly: I don’t like the upsell model for lifestyle photos. I give you all the edited images from our session (which vary by package). These will include a full range of color, black and whites, unique angles, and perspective crops. They are delivered digitally for you to download or print as much as you please!
